Our professional experience clearly shows that the majority of pool owners want to extend the season to the maximum and enjoy the comfort of their garden pool even on cooler September days. Fortunately, several professional alternatives exist today to achieve this. The most important step is the active heating of the pool water. In pool technology, there are five heating solutions that owners prefer to use with excellent efficiency. Below we briefly present these five popular types.
1. Solar Cover (The cornerstone of retaining heat)
Of course, heating the pool water alone is not enough: the generated heat must be kept in the water, in the simplest and most economical way possible. For this reason, alongside active heating systems and fixed pool enclosures, we specifically recommend the use of solar pool covers. Covering outdoor pools guarantees lower operating costs while effectively protecting the water from environmental impurities. By using a premium solar cover, the water temperature can be 3–4°C higher purely from the power of the sun. The most widespread and practical form of pool covering is solar foil (bubble wrap) covering. For the easy and damage-free movement and storage of the foil, we recommend installing a stable roller winding system. Round cover foils are typically made with a material thickness of 180 or 250 microns, oval versions with 250 microns, while custom-shaped, professional types are available with thicknesses of 300, 400, or even 500 microns.

2. Inverter Pool Heat Pumps
The application of heat pump technology is by no means a novelty, as modern air conditioning systems, home refrigerators, or dehumidifiers operate precisely on this principle. While with air conditioners we cool the indoor space and heat the outdoor air, and with refrigerators we produce heat on the back wall alongside internal cooling, pool heating heat pumps cool the ambient air and heat the pool water with the energy extracted from it. There are also systems utilizing the heat of the ground (geothermal), but due to their high installation costs, they are primarily used for heating residential houses. The deployment of air-to-water heat pumps optimized for pool heating is incomparably simpler, and their investment cost is also orders of magnitude lower. The only technological limitation is that the operation of traditional air heat pumps generally requires an ambient temperature above +5°C, which limits winter operation. For outdoor pools, this is not a problem, as they are not in use during the winter period, but for the independent heating of indoor pools, they are less optimal due to the cold air blown out by the device. Their great advantage is that they can be integrated retroactively into the mechanical system of existing pools without any demolition work. It is advisable to install them outdoors at a well-ventilated but somewhat protected spot. Since the pool water must be circulated directly through the device, the heat pump should be placed in the immediate vicinity of the pool plant room.

3. Electric Heating Elements
This heating alternative can be installed directly into the water circulation line of the pool (into the pressure line after filtration). Its operating principle is extremely simple: the device uses electricity to heat the water flowing through it via an internal heating element. Its operation requires industrial electricity (400V), the energy demand of which can even be compensated with a modern solar panel system (portable, inflatable hot tubs also work precisely on this flow-through principle). The huge advantage of the electric heating element is that it does not pollute the environment in any way during its operation, its space requirement is minimal, and it works with outstandingly high efficiency.

4. Water-to-Water Heat Exchangers (The most popular solution)
Pool heating combined with a heat exchanger is the most widespread and proven technology today. It can be perfectly adapted to pools of any size, shape, or type, and its greatest advantage is the extremely high heating capacity. Although the initial installation cost is higher, its operation is explicitly economical. The system connects to the house's existing central heating boiler (or other heat pump heating circuit) and transfers heat to the pool's circulated water through the internal lamellae of a water-to-water heat exchanger. Models equipped with a special plastic housing are becoming increasingly popular on the market, but premium quality stainless steel and titanium alloy materials still lead the sales lists – the installation of the latter is mandatory for pools with salt water disinfection to avoid corrosion. It is important to highlight that the heat exchanger does not generate heat by itself; its task is to transfer the hot water coming from an external source (e.g., gas boiler, solid fuel boiler, solar collector) to the pool technology system with maximum efficiency. If a reliable boiler system is available in the property, this is the most sensible choice.

5. Eco-friendly Solar Panels and Solar Mats
Solar Panel
If you are looking for a completely eco-friendly option with zero operating costs, the solar panel is the perfect choice. This technology directly converts clean solar energy into heat: the sun's rays heat up the dark-toned panels, and the pool water warms up as it passes through the internal channels. The temperature of the water flowing back into the pool is regulated by the speed of the water flow and the size of the solar panels. The larger the collecting surface of the panels and the slower the water passes through them, the more intensive the heating. The UV-stable solar panels, which can be connected to each other modularly, can remain outdoors every day of the year and can be connected directly to the pool's existing circulation pump. Along with its favorable price, it features extremely simple installability.

Solar Mat
Similar to solar panels, this solution also capitalizes on the free heat energy of the sun, however, here the pool water warms up while circulating in a flexible, thin polypropylene capillary tube system. The huge advantage of the solar mat is its highly favorable price range and mobility: thanks to its lightweight structure, it can be easily moved at any time to the point of the garden that receives the most intense sunlight. Its disadvantage, however, is that it must be disassembled before winter frosts, thoroughly emptied, and stored in a dry, frost-free place until the next spring.
